Track; Mamma Mia Girl

Released; 1st October, 2020
Mamma Mia Girl is the latest love-sick track from one of my favorite and talented indiepop artistes Sam and Sounds. With his last release less than two months ago this track helps build up anticipation around his soon to be released album coming out this month. When I first heard the title of this single my mind went racing to a line in Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody that said
Oh, mamma mia, mamma mia) Mamma mia, let me go Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
This song takes a heart pounding high tempo route right from the start with the clapping, plaintive guitar, heavy drums and the soft ringing vocals of Sam immediately catching my attention.
As the verse begins the distinctive rich voice of Sam immediately takes center stage as the instrumentals are reduced in intensity and relegated to the background for each of the verses but as the chorus sets in we see all the hard hitting instrumentals coming together to produce a melodic yet danceable tune.
I love how transient in intensity the beats/instrumentals are from the verse and the chorus, with the verses taking a more solemn take and the chorus carrying a more energetic vibe to it was a perfect mix.
As usual Sam and Sounds delivers a yet another well- written, well- produced and well- sung track that further cements my increasing longing for his debut album. Though as someone who has caught up on his old releases and frequently looks forward to new ones, I would want to see a bit of variance in terms of his lyrics, most of his songs follow the same concept of love and romance and that can get old too quickly.
Even with his own unique sound and twist without versatility in his lyrics he can easily be clumped together with most of the pop singers out right now. Despite this, the track is an enjoyable one which is once again an ode to his girlfriend, he had this to say about his inspiration for the song;
Sam and Sounds explains, ‘Mamma Mia Girl’ is my ‘elaborate way of describing my girlfriend. Not only in the way that I would describe her, but in the way that she would want to be talked about too. She is obsessed with the Mamma Mia movies and she’s in love with the fashion and coastal life that they give off. Don’t worry, she isn’t enamoured by the idea of going off with 3 different guys though! Haha!’Sam and Sounds

Meet the artiste
Audiences watched Sam and Sounds’ journey beginning in 2019, busking on the streets of Tunbridge Wells and Crawley. Being stuck at home during lockdown gave him little option other than to release music out into the digital world.
The reception Sam and Sounds received was unexpected as the first single climbed up the iTunes Pop chart reaching number 19 on the day of release. His second single also matched this achievement. From a standing start, his monthly listeners on Spotify reached 23,500 in the first month alone.”
